Questions about personal loans

What credit score do I need for a personal loan?

Many lenders start at 600 to 660, and the lowest rates go to borrowers above 720. Some lenders that specialize in fair credit will consider scores in the high 500s, at a higher APR and with an origination fee.

Does checking my rate hurt my credit?

Prequalifying uses a soft inquiry and does not affect your score. A hard inquiry happens only when you formally apply. Scoring models usually treat several inquiries for the same kind of loan within a short window as one.

Is a personal loan better than a credit card for debt?

Often, if the loan APR is lower than your card rates and you commit to the fixed term. A fixed payment and end date remove the temptation to carry a balance. If you can clear the debt in 12 to 18 months, a 0% balance transfer card may cost even less.

What is an origination fee?

A one-time fee, usually 1% to 8% of the loan, that a lender charges for processing. It is normally deducted from the money you receive, so you repay the full amount while getting less.
